Electronic Noses – Are They Going to Become a Normal Part of a Security System?

There has been a lot of developments within the electrical sensory equipment research recently, with advancements in technology in many different areas. A new thing, which was previously unfeasible, are electronic noses. These are sensory devices which can be used to detect odours and flavours, allowing for yet another area of sensory capacity with our surveillance systems.

Electronic noses certainly have situations in which they become desirable. Many contraband items, such as drugs, or even some bomb making equipment, carry odours and flavours which are distinct to themselves, and so far, any surveillance of these items through such methods has been done by using a canine to sense through their superior sense of smell. This has glaring complications however, with dogs regularly giving false positive alerts to contraband. Even so, there will be people unwilling to make the change, as even the most advanced electronic noses don’t have a sensory capacity equal to that of the most sensitive canine nose.
