Walkie talkies are extremely useful pieces of equipment. Long distance communication is very effective at managing the security of a premises.

A group of security guards armed with walkie talkies are much more effective than a group without. Efficient communication between several guards for example increases their ability to maintain a secure perimeter. This is because the guards can co-ordinate themselves more effectively, improving the area over which security is maintained.

In the event a guard is attacked or runs into some other kind of trouble, his ability to communicate with his teammates may mean the difference between catching a criminal, or suffering the loss of assets and even injury to the guard.

A solution to this is to use movement activated cameras. As the name suggests, these cameras will only start recording when it picks up movement within its visual range.

Another great advantage to movement activated cameras is that they are usually independent units. So they do not need to be connected to a computer or a power supply. Simply put the camera in a spot you consider a prime place for intruders, and come back to the camera after you suspect it may have picked something up.

There are many factors to think about when one needs to secure their premises. Apart from installing strong doors and windows, it is a good idea to have a security system that includes CCTV cameras. While having overt cameras all over is a good deterrence measure, there are some situations that require one to install covert surveillance systems.

While there are many cameras available on the market that have built in night vision, sometimes in very bad weather conditions at night, the camera may not pick up any image even with night vision functionality.

One solution to this issue is to install security lighting around the area you are trying to secure. Security lights are simply lights that illuminate a large area around a building when movement is detected. When coupled with security cameras overlooking the area, it will be hard for the cameras to not detect any movement, or at least the time when the lights were activated during the night. Which will be useful information for the police if  an actual break-in was to occur.

Outdoor security lights also have the added benefit of dazzling intruders. When large bright lights immediately illuminate something it can startle and deter anyone. This may scare off intruders entirely, or cause them to run into the vision range of a camera.

Available on the market today are consumer level long-range cameras. Designed specifically for long ranged surveillance, these cameras provide superior detection over entry level security cameras.

Standard long range cameras have a line of sight transmission range of up to 1,500 feet (450 meters). This is the optimal viewing distance and may vary depending on the environment and time of day the cameras are operating under. At night cameras of this specification will have reduced visibility ranges, down to approximately 100 feet (30 meters).

With added wireless functionality on certain models, connectivity can be obtained anywhere where the cameras wireless signal can be picked up. Its important to note though that if the camera is set up outside of several obstacles connectivity ranges will be reduced as the wireless signal has to pierce through these objects.

Because of the large visibility range and wireless function these cameras they can be set up in places standard models can not. This can increase the rate of detection as the cameras can be hidden in unsuspecting or camouflaged spots.

For surveillance to provide the best security it needs to be active 24 hours a day 7 days a week. For half that time its dark so it is essential for the best surveillance cameras to have fitted night vision functions. Most modern cameras do have this added function, but it’s important to make sure when selecting cameras to check for the added night vision feature. It is simply not feasible, for today’s security to not have night vision cameras, specifically because it’s common knowledge that most criminal activity is carried out at night time.

There are three main types of night vision. image intensification, active illumination and thermal vision. Most consumer level cameras use IR night vision (Infrared night vision) which is a form of thermal vision and provides adequate light detection at all times of day. There are many other aspects of IR vision to consider such as the variable wave-lengths and actual visibility ranges. These will all need to be taken into consideration when assessing the required task.

There is no question today that one of the biggest drains on the police service and the budget they have to work with is with the problems that arise due to alcohol abuse. This is particularly evident in town centres throughout the UK, where thousands of people turn out every night to get absolutely wasted, the consequences be damned.

It leaves everybody within the police in a very tricky position, as large sums of money need to be diverted from dealing with thefts, fraud, and worse, purely to help control the massive numbers of people behaving disorderly while drunk; causing harm to others and people’s property.

Most police officers, and police chiefs in particularly, have been calling for years for more action to be taken to begin to tackle this problem; with increased duty put on alcohol, harsher penalties for repeat offenders, and more money put into the police service so that they have more resources to deal with the situation.

Whatever we look towards as a nation to help to deal with the current situation, it is clear that if we want to improve our ability to deal with crimes like fraud and theft, then we will need to prioritise for it, which means we will have to deal with alcohol abuse in one way or another.

Security is one of the most important things that need to be considered in our daily lives. No matter what we do, how much we earn, or what we have, all of it is for naught if we do not have the capability to keep ourselves safe. There’s a lot to think about when considering CCTV installation in your property/business premises. Below are a few things to consider when thinking about the big move.

DO consider whether you really need CCTV. Some buildings don’t need it at all, with a dummy camera and dummy sign sufficing. Think about the objectives of making such a move and weigh up the costs and benefits to your business.

DON’T position your camera incorrectly. Think about what you want to record. Do you need face-frontal views, or would the back of the head be okay for your objectives? DON’T forget, if your camera installation is for identification purposes, they should be placed at eye level.

DO purchase the correct recorder. Think about whether you need the recordings of live imagery, because if so you will need to purchase a higher spec DVR capable of good image quality.

DON’T install yourself, it’s not as easy as you think! Get a professional to install the system. It may cost more, but you will reap the benefits of a correctly installed device.
