The Issue Of Lag Time And Delay On Security Cameras

All security cameras have a downside, and that’s the lag time between a camera viewing an image electronically, and its subsequent transmission to a recording and/or display device. Between these two processes there is always a delay, which can sometimes become a fatal flaw for some security systems.

The wise thing to do to get around this issue may seem to be to invest in better quality equipment, but there is a flaw in doing this. The quality of the camera doesn’t determine the severity of camera lag. Even the most expensive cameras have lag times that amount to 5 to 10 seconds or more.

This can be a potential issue for security systems that use motion detection as a primary way to identify intruders. In this case, a camera with long lag times will pick up and transmit the motion that is detected. But the camera won’t visually record what tripped the motion detection in time, leaving an activated security system with no record of what set it off.
